Ray Edward Shoemake
(7-15-31 to 4-7-88)
Today my Father would have been 75 years old. He was born on July 15th 1931 in Stillwell Oklahoma near his family’s home in Bowlegs. He was born to Lester Henry (Hap) and Mytra Taylor - Shoemake. His Mother died on Christmas Eve 1938 when he was 7 years old, he told me that he got a pair of shoes and a cap gun that year, with no caps. Because my Grandfather could not work and take care of two boys my Father and his younger brother Frank went to live with their Grandmother in Haskell Oklahoma. When he was 18 he and a cousin drove to Bakersfield California where they picked potatoes for one season and then returned home. He joined the National Guard and went to cooking school at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas, he was called up to active duty in the Army in 1952 and went to Korea where he attained the rank of Buck Sergeant. After Korea and the Army he married my Mother, Ella Rea Katherine Denton on December 28th 1953. He attended college at Conners State College in Warner Oklahoma, while my Mother went to Bacone College in Muskogee. He was going to be an Algebra Teacher but was offered a job installing carpet and at the time it paid more than a school teacher, so for the sake of his family he chose the one with more pay. My older Brother Larry Ray was born in 1954, my sister Mytra Faye was born in 1961, and I Charles Edward was born in 1964, my younger brother Gary Lee was born in 1968. In 1971 we moved from Muskogee to West Covina California and later settled in Upland where in 1972 my youngest Brother James Allen was born.. The whole reason for moving to California was for a better way of life but after 4 years of my Father working up to 7 days a week at times, we moved back to Oklahoma. To skip ahead some, in 1984 we found out my Mother had Leukemia and on April 17th of 1885 she died due to complications. I’m sure a part of my father died that day also. On May 22nd 1988, I got a call at work that something was wrong with my Father and I rushed home. My sister was there and told me that he had come home early from work with a bad headache, his boss was worried about him because he never took off sick, came to check on him and could not get him to answer the door. Apparently he had gone to sleep and fallen into a coma, they took him to the hospital where later he died, he never woke up. The doctors said it was most likely an aneurism but could not tell for sure without an autopsy, we declined to have one because it was of no use. My father was the hardest working man I ever knew, he gave 100% everyday in everything he did, it did not matter if anyone knew the effort he put out or not, he knew. He was an honest man and he loved my Mom dearly. All he ever did was work and take care of his family, if it weren’t for us kids he would have died the same day my Mom did. He was well liked by everyone who met him and he was my friend and hero. If there is any good in me at all is it is because of him. I believe he was around 8 years old in this picture, it was taken about 1939. Dad I love you and Mom, the world has not been near as good of a place without you, I only wish that Emily would have known you both. You would have been proud of her. I hope that you would have been proud of all of us.

That is one heck of a family you have there, and they would be so proud of you and Emily.
It's a hard thing, loss. it never makes sense and hardly ever heals.
Hope you have some amount of joyful recollection on this day Chuck. Sounds like your dad was a great guy... which explains why you are such a great guy too.
i was very lucky to have good parents, i had a good childhood, i had everything i needed and somethings i wanted, my mom and dad went without a lot to see that we had what we did, i wish that they would have lived long enough for me to have realized that and made their lives easier. at least i got to tell them that i loved them.
This is a wonderful ode to a powerful influence in your life. You are, no doubt, a chip off the ol' block. He'd be proud of you too chuck. You're a stand up guy in a generation with Sit Downers Syndrome. I just made that up but it makes sense to me.Glad your back snookums!
That was so good. That was just so good. You write so well. Your dad sounds like such a great man, and yep -- you're a chip off the old block :) The kinds of standards he lived by he instilled in you. He would be very proud indeed.
you ladies are good for my soul
As I set here with tears (and snot) runnin I find myself being so thankful for my family. I love and miss Mom & Dad very much. I sometimes forget how long it has been since I last saw them. I am so thankful for the family I have remaining and I tend to forget to let them know how much I LOVE them. Although, Chuck, you are a hemoroid, a retard, and a big ol duffus, you are who you are because of Mom and Dad. And that too I am thankful for. Now stop writing stuff that makes me cry!!
That last comment comes from my MUCH OLDER sister (my ONLY sister)who as a child I use to pin down on the floor and drool in her face until she got mad enough to kick my butt. Next time I see her I'm gonna wipe a booger on her.
hehe.. that is the cutest thing i have ever read!!! hemeroids and boogers oh my!
Ok Chuck.....First of all, Dear, I am only 3years, 7 months and 14 days older. Second of all, I've had enough boogers on me in my short lifetime from you and the other hellions to fill a MAC truck, and enough GAS expelled on me to float a hot air balloon from here to China. And third, I undersand that many make a fortune from the internet. For the right amount of cash, checks or credit cards I could be persuaded to reveal your childhood NICKNAME and post pictures of you in halloween costumes, so watch your step Big Boy. Luv ya and DGU!!
First off I recall YOU having a nickname ! Maybe the people where you work would be interested in knowing it... Hmm? M**E T***N !! And you also forget that I have a huge box of your child hood pictures with a certain pair of glasses that look like they should be worn by Cat Woman on an episode of Batman... Hmm? Remember, I'm the one who held you down and put my nekkid butt on your face, so don't mess with old Charlie Brown !!
Dad - No dad you are wrong I have the box of childhood pictures in my closet, so at any time I can scan them and post them so people can see them.
love ya,
Emily
M**E T***N (My Aunt) - Same with you, I can send pictures of you to your work. So you guys be nice. Ya hear! HeHe...
love ya,
Emily
Hello Everyone !!
LMAO - I have snot and tears running now. Hello sis and hello Emily! Nice to meet you and see you here. You have an AWESOME brother and awesome father! I love my mom and dad dearly, and so to read this tribute from Chuck and you all to your folks is... well... It's great! It's just beautiful. I cried when I read it.
If I have to stop this car one more time, somebody's getting their ass tanned with this hairbrush. Now, Chucky say your sorry to your sister. And sister, say you'll forgive your brother for putting his ass in your face. I know he pulled a dutch oven on you and you gagged but you must be nice to your brother. He had such a hard time through the years wearing that helmet. Now, you kids be nice, ok?
Heavenly Father thank you for not giving me any brothers! Farting on your sister! Wiping boogers on your sister! Putting your ass in your sister's face! You, and I really cleaned up this comment, are a real stinker!

P.S. As I read your entry I am amazed at what a humble beginning I came from. My Mom (the smartest women ever) had sixth grade education. I don't know what grade my Dad got to, but I know he was working to feed his siblings when he was six or so. My Mom spoke, read, and wrote two languages (Japanese and English) and understood more Spanish than me after two years of high school Spanish. My Dad spoke, read, and wrote two languages (English and Spanish) and spoke enough Japanese to trap my Mom. My sister was a straight "A" student all through school and did attend two years of college. And then there was me...

Okay, Okay, once again I give. I never could get the best of any of you boys. Well...maybe Jamie a few times. I just hope I have as many more years of torture as I already have had.
Love you too Emily. ( she is EXACTLY like her daddy!! )
Di - i hoped they tickled you until you peed, now that's real brotherly love.
babs - my sister was a huge brat (and still is) she deserved every booger, fart, and ass rub she got, we still treat her the same way, she just can't tell mom and dad on me anymore ! Ha !
azcg - i'm so sorry that you were deprived as a child and had no one to wipe things on you, it saddens me and makes me want to wipe more things on my sister... and i think i will. thanks for the e-mail it was just great, talk to you soon. xoxo
sis - emily has agreed to carry on our family tradition and she will be wiping stuff on you too, so you can enjoy boogers for years to come.
Oh sibling love..it just makes me want to run right over to bro #1's house and beg him to lie on the floor..spread his legs..light a match and fart! It really..really does.
Thanks much for the insight into your warm & wonderful family Chuck. Both the written and unwritten thoughts speak volumes as to the pride you take in one another. There really is nothing better in this life than a family who loves you exactly as you are..boogers..snots..asses and all.
I'm willing to bet your beloved mum & dad are prouder than proud at what their offspring have accomplished in becoming the people they are today. And something tells me they know your Emily really well.
One of my fav quotes that keeps proving itself over and over again goes like this:
"No one's death comes to pass without making some impression, and those close to the deceased inherit part of the liberated soul and become richer in their humanness."
~Hermann Broch~
Chuck, your dad sounds like a great guy, I know you miss them dearly. My dad was born May 10, 1932 in TX. Today 7-20, we played golf together for the first time. It was great. He has been playing a long time and has got a good game at 74. I'm glad you're back in the saddle. Many people are always thinking about you and concerned about your well being, myself included. Later man
Mary - great to hear from you, great words as always, i liked the quote a lot, keep taken care of yourself.
whozfan - golf with your dad, sounds like a great day, i hope you have many more like them.
