UPDATE TO PET FOOD RECALL:

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has released the following statement concerning the PURINA involvement in the latest pet food recall:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- St. Louis, Missouri, March 30, 2007 . . . Nestlé Purina PetCare Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning today that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina’s 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.

Earlier today the FDA announced the finding of melamine in products related to the March 16 Menu Foods recall, and advised Purina of the source of the contaminated supply. Purina then determined that it had received some quantity from the suspect supplier. The company proactively notified the FDA and immediately began this recall process.

Purina is confident that the contaminated wheat gluten has been isolated to this limited production quantity of ALPO Prime Cuts canned products.
The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date.** This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.

Purina’s 5.3-ounce Mighty Dog® pouch products, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution on March 16 as part of the Menu Foods recall. ONLY Mighty Dog pouch products and specific date codes of ALPO Prime Cuts canned dog food are being recalled.

Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

Consumers should immediately stop feeding ALPO Prime Cuts products with the above-listed date codes to their dogs and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.

Purina guarantees all of its products, and consumers can receive the full replacement value of the recalled products. Consumers can visit us at www.purina.com or call 1-800-218-5898, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, to receive more information.

Hi Chuck, just popping in again to say Hi, I have been busy too. Goodness gracious :) what's happening over there with all the food recalls? I hope the dogs are ok!
Same here, if I don't blog or visit too often I noticed that all my readers are disappearing, it's sad, but life goes on.
Take care.

Okay, here’s my theory: Some of this Chinese contaminated wheat gluten is being shipped to Fiji at this very moment. Because Fiji isn’t into prepackaged pet foods they will repackage the stuff as an ingredient for goat chow and ship it off to England. When England gets it they will repackage the stuff as an ingredient for waterfowl feed and ship it off to Hawaii. Hawaii will receive it and figure if it’s good enough for the water fowl it should be good for song birds. So Hawaii repackages the stuff into cans and ships the cans unlabeled to the United States with instructions that the cans contain an ingredient that can be used to coat seeds in bird feed. So the United States sends the unlabeled cans to Mexico to be labeled as bird seed coating, but there is a mix up at the label printing plant and the labels say that the can’s ingredients is to be used as a thickening agent for corn tortillas. So the entire batch of mislabeled cans are sent back to the United States where they sit in a warehouse until someone orders ground corn for corn tortillas and the warehouse also ships a free case of corn tortilla thickening agent for the vendor to try for free. Then you and I go down to the local taco stand order a killer taco and die. Oh yeah, have a great Easter!

Hey Chuck! Thank you so much for the great info you have kept here on your blog on the recall. (And at the same time - while I'm sittin here worried as HECK about the recall and ?? what to feed my crew, I'm lmao on azcg girl's take on this farkin recall and how we are going to eat a taco and have a wonderful dammit Easter :) . I feed my crew SUNSHINE and just about had a COW to learn yesterday that they recalled their dog biscuits (which thank God I don't get my dogs) that they think may have that shit from China in them (gluten or Milenanine or whatever the hell that stuff is called that the FDA says ain't supposed to be in "food"), but according to what I'm reading on their site (sunshine site), their dried dog food isn't affected (yeah right - like I'm supposed to feel OK about feeding my dogs the dried after they tell me their farkin biscuits have been realled), but.... what is a dog person supposed to do??!! I have visions of cooking up pots of rice and potatoes and buying canned hash and chicken livers and.... or.... learning how to HUNT in order to feed my dogs safely!! ARG I am stressed over the dog and cat food recalls!! :):) But anyhow... since I came by this morning, I had to say hey to you! Ain't it something - dogs keep us together :) I once maintained a blog called "It's all about the dogs" (I wonder why?) Great to see you! Hope you're hanging in there and doing well these days. Doing pretty good here. Check with you later.

azcg - either you take your pills or i'll crush them up an put them in your tamales. and i agree with wys, your take on the chinese gluten taco amazes me.

wys - it's a good day when i hear from you. i actually fed my dogs at least 2 cans of the recalled alpo prime cuts:

BEST BEFORE FEB. 2009 7053 1159

i about s**t when i read the numbers, i buy their food in 8 packs of the 22 oz. i wonder if some that they've already gone through was affected or not. i've been feeding them cubed up spam for the last week. i have some pedigree but i'm kind of scared of it too. how long have they been using this stuff? how many times has it happened before? who's responsible? if the pets don't show signs now will it shorten their lives any later on? how much is too much? am i gonna have to bust some caps in someones a** before this is over. if you mess with my dogs, you're messing with my family!! i'll get ugly(er) real quick. talk to yawl later.
