My Kid Wants A Job

My kid turns 16 in a little over 2 months, and she wants a job. I thought you had to be 18 but she got a special work permit from school for people under 18 wanting a part time job. I really don’t want her to have a job yet, she has enough to do with taking care of me, the dogs, and school work. But if she wants one I wouldn’t try and stop her, she’s a great kid and anyone that would hire her would be getting an amazing employee. I trust her more than any grownup I know and she has always been the best help that I could ever have. She picked up 3 applications today, McDonald’s, Braum’s, and Charlie’s Chicken. She chose these places because they were within walking distance from our house. I used to tease her that if she did not keep her grades up that all she would have to learn was to say, “Would you like fries with that?” Because that’s where she was gonna wind up working was McDonald’s. Now I don’t think that it would be such a bad place to work for a kid, if she could handle it there she could probably handle just about any job. I’m still waiting for my Disability to start and when it does the first thing that I’m gonna buy is a truck for her, that‘s what she wants and we’ve already found a good used one that she likes. We both hope that it is still available when we get our money, but if it’s not we’ll find her another one just as good or better. She also got an Oklahoma Driver’s Manual yesterday and I signed the permission slip for her to take Driver’s Education next semester. I’ve always enjoyed watching her grow up, but now I wish that it would just frigging stop. It’s not fair.

shane - thanks friend, she is a nice girl, seems kind of rare around here these days, most kids seem pretty rotten and selfish. i asked her why she wanted a job and she said so she could help out around here. i just wish that i could do more for her.

it seems like you raised her well Chuck. Most teenagers these days don't want to work and if they have to, they do it with a sour face - they are so spoilt! Grrr..
In my opinion, working is one of the best things a teenager can do. They learn the real value of money, how to save it, use it and share it. I'll stop the philosophy now. :)
have a good weekend!!

Chuck, Happy Belated Birthday! You keep that up and you are gonna catch up with me. I'm sure your daughter won't have any problem finding that first job, she sounds like a great young lady. Good looking Chevy there. I've got a cherry 1987 Chevy Silverado 4WD with only 83,000 miles on it. I mainly drive it in the winter. Check your emails when ya get a chance. Happpy Trails

Count your blessings Chuck, you got one heck of a kid there! We got family members (on K's side) that are in their late 30's and still living with Mama with their hand out asking for money for cigs, and spending money. Hard to see young people with no ambition whatsoever!

Three cheers for Emily Katherine -- you go girl!!!

Emily is a rare teen indeed.. most do not want to work at all and have parents pulling out hairs to try!

I know what you mean with the growing up thing. I feel the same way wit Kira sometimes. You want to see the woman they turn out to be... but it's so nice to have them depend on you and to have that love so close.

Hope you are feeling alright today. Maybe swing by my blog on saturday for a toast of drink!

Hey Chuck!

It's sorta like this... have you ever heard the term "Coupon Queen?" Well, I'm one. When there's a great sale at the grocery store I'm there with my box of coupons! Then that throws me off my coupon clipping schedule and that takes away from my computer time. I've been to the store three times this week to stock up my pantry and my freezer. I bought $34.38 at one store and paid $1.60. I bought $45.18 at another and paid $5.75. and the third store forgot to give me my receipt, but I paid less than $2 for a bunch of stuff. I donate food to the Westside Food Bank, so even if something is on sale that I don't use, I buy it and donate to family or the food bank.

A short summary:

Chocolate chips reg 2.79 paid .20
Butter reg 2.69 paid .00
Juicy Juice reg 3.40 paid .00
Weiners reg 3.99 paid .00
Simply Potatoes reg 2.49 paid .00
Chicken Boobs reg 2.79 lb paid .78 lb

The list goes on, but you get the idea. Lots of the stuff goes to K's son (he has three kids).

She's growing up so quick, huh? A job is wonderful, it plants seeds. Just don't allow her to work too much and if she keeps her grades up, which is the important part, she should be fine.

She sounds like an amazing girl. I can see why you are so proud of her.
It is hard to watch them grow up, but it's also one of my greatest sources of pride and joy. You're right. It's not fair!!

You are dripping with pride :) Conratulations for having such a mature wise daughter!
Let her try it, that's the only way to find out if she'll like it or not.

Hey Chuck, My daughter turned 16 a few months back so I have an idea whats running thru your head ....
Hell ! They were lying sleeping peacefully in nappies just a few blinks ago !! Where did the time fly to ?? I too am a proud and lucky father and so far have not had reason to complain one bit about my kids behavior - you gotta just do your best and then when they take over their own lives ya gotta just be them to catch them if they fall.... Just like teachin em to ride a bike. You gotta push and then let go !!

babs - she brought home a progress report from school today, 3 "A's", 3 "B's", and 1 "C", not too bad, she got the "C" in science, she said that it's her hardest class, but she'll bring it up, i'm ok with that, it's better than i did in high school.

spidey - she is my pride and joy, i hate seeing her grow up so fast but then again i can't wait for the next step, i can't wait too buy her a truck but i'm scared to death to see her drive.

hannelie - i think she'll like having her own money and she'll love being around people, thanks for stopping by, it's always a pleasure.

Di - my dear friend, my B-Day was the 15th of Sept. i'm an old man of 42 now (that's only 6 in dog years) miss ya. xoxo

bosbefok - i couldn't have said it better, no complaints here. that letting go part sounds pretty hard though, thanks.
