Theodore Roosevelt's Ideas on Immigrants and Being an AMERICAN in 1907"
In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

hmm... arguable. Entirely because it was not the english who first settled in America. But it is a nice sentiment. Vey Star Trek'ish.. hehe.
I wish more people opted to read this. America as it is today does not assimulate this premise.
Xmichra - there were so many immigrants pouring into america that our founding fathers the ones that signed our declaration of independence, had to put to a vote what would be our national language, it came down to 3, english, french, and german. of course english one out over german... by one vote. wouldn't that have made things different.
if it were up to me we'd all be speaking cherokee or algonquin. and everyone who moved or lived here would speak it too (along with whatever else thay wanted)roosevelt was born in new york and his family was dutch, he spoke four languages fluently.
thank babs, i needed that. i'm havin' one of those days. i tried to put a link on here so that folks could kind of "read the rest of the story" but everytime i linked it half my page would disappear.
Teddy was a great guy. Took the same risks as his soldiers and did the same work as his hired hands on his ranch. He wasn't a politician, he was a man. There aren't any like him today.
Bonjour!
Parlez-vous anglais?
Was just trying it out! The vote could very well have been for French!
Adieu!

Montanus - You Sir, Are a MAN among MEN. Teddy was in deed a man and prided himself on it. I have a 1969 Teddy Roosevelt Commemorative Winchester Model '94 30.30 Lever Action with an Octagon Barrel and Nickle Plated Receiver that's never had a round through it. it's one of my prize pieces. It has a 4 inch longer barrel than the standard '94.
I also have a large loop Model '91 in a .45 Long Colt with a 16 inch barrel that looks a lot like what John Wayne carried, and a matching Caliber 71 Colt Single Action Army Revolver with a 4 inch barrel, it doesn't have Ivory grips (yet) but the American Walnut looks pretty good. Oink, Oink, Oink! I'm sorry I got excited.
AZCG - it was hard enough to learn english and i can still butcher it up pretty well.
blogger ATE MY FRICKEN COMMENT!! gah!
chuck, it comes down to this. I am not real happy with the fact that Indian children were made to go to Indian schools such as the one in Carlisle, Pa., where their hair was cut and they were forbidden to speak their language. Our past is full of wrong manuevers and wrong turns. But today it is and always will be America, an english speaking country. Teddy Roosevelt was known for his hunting and principles. He didn't make it to the Presidency on good looks but a righteous premise, as he fought along side his men as montanus said.He was a man of principle. Regardless, in 2006 and as in the past you can shit in one hand and wish in another for things to be different and our past to be different but it won't be. We are,"One nation under God," with an English speaking and written constitution. I paid a dear price for not honoring that constitution and all it's amendments and still stand behind it. If you want to live in this country, you must live and abide by United States law and speak English. If you don't like that stay the hell out and stay where the F**K you are! sorry for the book!
And you're telling me this because...
chuck, I'm siding with your ass, that's what I'm telling you, you sassy camp you!!
And you're calling me a sassy camp because...
ok chuck, that's it! Now, step outside we'll settle this right here, right now you you sissy camp!!
And you want to settle this because...
