We Celebrate Our Blacksheep

Most families might shy away from the truth about having an Outlaw in the family tree. Not rednecks or Shoemakes. We celebrate the fact, even brag about them when given the chance. We had relatives on both sides or the law. The deputy sheriff mentioned in the article, Dick Shoemake was my Great Grandpa's brother and his nephew Cole Shoemake was of course the outlaw. Go here to, "Wanted! On The Trail Of An Outlaw" and read the whole story. It even links the Shoemakes by acquaintance to the notorious outlaw, "Henry Starr" nephew of famed outlaw, "Belle Starr" anyway it's interesting reading and not too long. Click on the link and check it out.

You would think that people who have a 'slight' relation to hitler would shut the hell up. but noooo.. several of my second cousins over in germany like to blab.

I personally am not in the blood line (they are second cousins through marriage) but even if i were, i wouldn't be going around saying "ah man, that Adolf, he sure was a thinker!".

I'm afraid that if I shook the ol' family tree a bunch of horse thieves, outlaws, and womanizers would fall out! My father’s mother had eight kids and if you lined them all up they all looked like strangers. Some were tall with green eyes, other were short with dark eyes, she must have had a revolving door in her bedroom, so there’s no tellin’ what lurks in our family tree, but I’d bet you good money there were some shady characters literally hanging in the family tree.

azcg - it's funny that if you have an uncle that robs people nowdays he's a scumbag, but if you have a relative that did it 100 years ago he's an outlaw and there's something romantic about it. if i had been born 100 or so years ago i believe that i would have been a notorious highway man and outlaw. two dollar whiskey, two dollar women, and a fifty dollar horse, i'd been poopin' in tall cotton!

If I was born 100 years ago I'd have been married to a drunken scoundrel who beat me, I'd have seven ugly kids, and two ugly dogs, living in a shack built on the side of a steep hill in a small mining town... wait a second I think I just described my grandmother's life!
